MIF: National Club Intro: Dempo SC

Dempo SC

About:

Patronized by the famous Dempo group of companies in Goa, Dempo had always been a good side but became a truly all-conquering team in the past four years. Coached by Armando Colaco, a shrewd tactician, Dempo have won the National Football League (now I-League) title thrice and demolished almost every opposition that came their way during this period. The club’s best moments, however, came in the AFC Cup when they reached the semi-finals in 2008 by beating some of the strongest teams in the continental competition.
So absolute is Dempo’s domination in Indian football at the moment that it has seven representatives in the Indian team. The pillars of the national team – Mahesh Gawli, Anwar, Samir Naik, Climax Lawrence, Clifford Miranda, Anthony Pereira and Sunil Chetri – are all from Dempo and almost all of them have permanent places in the first eleven of the national team.
After winning almost every trophy at the domestic level, including the I-League, the Federation Cup and the Durand Cup, Dempo are now looking forward to spread their wings at the continental level. Determined to meet all the criteria of the AFC club licensing policy, Dempo are now planning to establish a complete professional set up, including well-trained junior teams at different age group levels.

History:

Dempo Sports Club, got the title in 1967, after Goa’s largest business group, Dempo took over it. Originally named Bicholim Sports Club when formed in 1960, Dempo Sports Club has risen to the pinnacle of sporting achievements in soccer, thanks to three generations of Dempo helmsmen, first the late Vasantrao S. Dempo, who was Chairman Emeritus, then his son the late Vasudev V. Dempo, Former Chairman, and now his grandson and current Group Chairman Shinivas V. Dempo. Under the tutelage of Manuel V. Rebelo, former Vice President Operations-Dempo, and Vilas Sardesai, former Vice President of All India Football Federation, and coaching provided by Armando Colaco, former football international, the club has gone from strength to strength, marking their presence felt at both state and national level.
No expense was spared to sign on talented players from within the country or abroad. No effort was spared to professionalize the club. No stone was left unturned to inculcate in players the values of sportsmanship, fair play and playing for the sake of the game. What makes Dempo Sports Club unique is their commitment to promote soccer from the grassroots. Spotting and training talented youngsters and developing them all-round are their forte. The roster of internationals, who have blossomed under such patronage reads Coutinho, Jules Alberto Dias, Rejesh Meetai, Pio Rodrigues, Nascimento Silveira, Denis Cabral, Ajay Diwadkar and Leo Rebello.
Indian soccer’s most prized crowns are now worn by Dempo Sports Club with both the Federation Club Tournament and the National Football League tournament going their way in 2005-06.
In the coming years, Dempo Spots Club hopes to carry on the sterling work it has been doing in popularizing and professionalizing the world’s favorite sport in the Republic of India.
